The Last Theorem: A Novel , Hörbuch, Digital, 1...

The Last Theorem is a story of one man's mathematical obsession, and a celebration of the human spirit and the scientific method. It is also a gripping intellectual thriller in which humanity, facing extermination from all-but-omnipotent aliens, the Grand Galactics, must overcome differences of politics and religion and come together or perish. In 1637, the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat scrawled a note in the margin of a book about an enigmatic theorem. He also neglected to record his proof elsewhere. Thus began a search for the Holy Grail of mathematics, a search that didn't end until 1994, when Andrew Wiles published a 150-page proof. But the proof was burdensome, overlong, and utilized mathematical techniques undreamed of in Fermat's time, and so it left many critics unsatisfied, including young Ranjit Subramanian, a Sri Lankan with a special gift for mathematics and a passion for the famous "Last Theorem".When Ranjit writes a three-page proof of the theorem that relies exclusively on knowledge available to Fermat, his achievement is hailed as a work of genius, bringing him fame and fortune. But it also brings him to the attention of the National Security Agency and a shadowy United Nations outfit called Pax per Fidem, or Peace Through Transparency, whose secretive workings belie its name. Suddenly Ranjit and his wife, Myra de Soyza, an expert in artificial intelligence, find themselves swept up in world-shaking events, his genius for abstract mathematical thought put to uses that are both concrete and potentially deadly. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to anyone on Earth, an alien fleet is approaching the planet at a significant percentage of the speed of light. Their mission: to exterminate the dangerous species of primates known as homo sapiens. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Mark Bramhall. Artists' Magazines

How artists' magazines, in all their ephemerality, materiality, and temporary intensity, challenged mainstream art criticism and the gallery system. During the 1960s and 1970s, magazines became an important new site of artistic practice, functioning as an alternative exhibition space for the dematerialized practices of conceptual art. Artists created works expressly for these mass-produced, hand-editioned pages, using the ephemerality and the materiality of the magazine to challenge the conventions of both artistic medium and gallery. In Artists' Magazines, Gwen Allen looks at the most important of these magazines in their heyday (the 1960s to the 1980s) and compiles a comprehensive, illustrated directory of hundreds of others. Among the magazines Allen examines are Aspen (1965-1971), a multimedia magazine in a box-issues included Super-8 films, flexi-disc records, critical writings, artists' postage stamps, and collectible chapbooks; Avalanche (1970-1976), which expressed the countercultural character of the emerging SoHo art community through its interviews and artist-designed contributions; and Real Life (1979-1994), published by Thomas Lawson and Susan Morgan as a forum for the Pictures generation. These and the other magazines Allen examines expressed their differences from mainstream media in both form and content: they cast their homemade, do-it-yourself quality against the slickness of an Artforum, and they created work that defied the formalist orthodoxy of the day. Artists' Magazines, featuring abundant color illustrations of magazine covers and content, offers an essential guide to a little-explored medium.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Coordinated School Health Program model in reducing childhood obesity rates using state level data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS) for the years 1994, 2000, and 2006. I measured the effectiveness of school health policies including routine BMI screening, joint activities between health education and food service staff, staff training on nutrition, staff training on exercise, certifying health educators, prohibiting sale of junk food, limiting access to vending machines, whether schools teach about nutrition in class, and whether schools teach about exercise in class. Demographic differences including race, education, income, health coverage, and adults smoking habits were controlled for. Requiring BMI screening and providing training in nutrition for school staff yielded statistically significant results. I provided policy implications and recommendations.

Genuine Participation in Social Change Programs

Modernist approaches to socioeconomic development have been used by governmental and non-governmental institutions to address general issues of poverty and underdevelopment in Guinea and most African countries since the 1960s. Such approaches guided a variety of development programs, particularly to improve agricultural, education, and health (Nnadozie, 2003). However, increased discrepancies between expected and observed outcomes of such approaches increased objections among academics and development practitioners who overtime found the need for and favored more participatory approaches to social change (Chambers 1995, 2002, Cernea 1985, White et al., 1994, Servaes et al.,1996, and Jacobson, 2004). This study argues that the success of such participatory initiatives is strongly dependent of the level of genuine participation of the beneficiaries. The study identified, examined, and measured indicators of beneficiaries genuine participation in social change programs. The results indicated significant differences between beneficiaries and benefactors in their overall opinions and in their profiles on the issue of beneficiaries participation in social change programs in Guinea.

Distinctive Features of the North American Regi...

Under the conditions of change and uncertainty, countries around the world have sought regional arrangements to solve their mutual problems or to provide a common front vis-à-vis rest of the world. Despite tremendous success of the European integration and predictions during the 1990s that the post-Cold War world would culminate into a world of competing regional blocs, we are hardly close to this vision. This book highlights the unique characteristics of the North American region and addresses the question why NAFTA did not lead to a deeper and wider integration like that of Europe? Answer to this question was found in the NAFTA treaty itself. Even though Canada and Mexico were first and third largest trading partners of the United States in 1994, NAFTA negotiators took an extra care to maintain their national sovereignties. In addition to nationalism and differences in the size of economies, major reason for this attitude was a desire of the countries to maintain their independence towards rest of the world.

Choosing the Right Control System for Organizat...

In this book we focus on three organizational strategies, the innovators, the defenders and the prospectors. Given the multifaceted character of the concept of strategy, a number of different definitions have been developed in the literature, each on a particular basis. One of such definitions focus on the 'rate of change of products or markets' (Miles et al., 1978), whereas some other on 'product innovation' (Miller and Roth, 1994). This study is thus, based on a mixed strategic typology combining the innovators of Miller and Roth (1994) and the defenders and prospectors of Miles et al. (1978). Innovators put most importance to their capacity to change products or services quickly according to the need of the market. Whereas, the defenders are most suitable for a stable market and its management is not concerned about the changes in its environment and restrict the entry of others in its domain. The prospectors on the other hand, perform in an environment that is more dynamic than the defenders. The background research for this book underline the critical differences of various management practices in the above mentioned three types of organizational strategies.
